Physicians (medical doctors) perform a thorough medical assessment to confirm the diagnosis of concussion and identify appropriate treatment recommendations. Your Physician will also help monitor your recovery progress and readiness to return to high-risk activities (e.g. contact sport). |
Physiotherapists perform manual therapy (e.g., massage) and exercise prescription to help address a variety of physical symptoms including headache, neck pain, dizziness, balance problems, fatigue, and visual function. They also help with returning to sport and other physical activities. |
The PREVENT program aims to help reduce the risk for re-injury among people who have sustained a recent concussion. It was created in response to research showing that athletes are more likely to sustain another injury when returning to sport after an initial concussion. The program focuses on the neck, which is an important factor in concussion risk because it supports the head. Assessments and exercises are performed to improve neck strength, stability, mobility, and function, which may help reduce risk for concussion. |
Occupational therapists provide education for managing symptoms and returning to school, work, or other daily activities. They can help implement energy management strategies to reduce fatigue or other symptoms that make it difficult to perform daily activities. They can also help coordinate appropriate school or work accommodations based on individual needs.
Our mental health team, comprised of social workers and psychologists, provides counselling support to help individuals address negative thoughts or feelings and understand how they may be affecting other aspects of their life. Our mental health professionals also teach coping strategies for stress, anxiety, sadness, irritability, and difficulty sleeping.
Neuropsychologists are psychologists who specialize in the assessment and treatment of cognitive (thinking) abilities. They perform computerized screening tests that assess several thinking skills including memory, attention, and processing speed. Results from this testing can be used to help inform treatment planning and school or work accommodations.
Ergonomics assessments help identify specific aspects of a job or workstation that may contribute to discomfort. This information is used to make recommendations to address these factors and reduce discomfort, which may include changes to workstation layout, new equipment, or behavioral strategies.
Our massage therapists perform manual therapy and exercise techniques to help reduce muscle tension in the neck, back, and shoulders. This can help improve posture and mobility and alleviate headache, neck pain, or other muscular issues.
The Buffalo Concussion Treadmill/Bike Test is an evidence-based exertion test which helps determine a safe level of exercise to promote recovery from concussion. It also helps facilitate return to sport or other physical activities.
