Physicians (medical doctors) perform a thorough medical assessment to confirm the diagnosis of concussion and identify appropriate treatment recommendations. Your Physician will also help monitor your recovery progress and readiness to return to high-risk activities (e.g. contact sport). |
Physiotherapists are instrumental in addressing various aspects of concussion recovery, utilizing hands-on techniques and prescribed exercises to alleviate symptoms such as neck pain and headaches. Tailored exercise programs are designed to target impairments in the visual and balance systems, addressing challenges like screen intolerance and dizziness. Physiotherapists also provide ongoing guidance for a safe return to sports activities, closely monitoring progress and incorporating cardiovascular exercise into the rehabilitation plan. |
The PREVENT program aims to help reduce the risk for re-injury among people who have sustained a recent concussion. It was created in response to research showing that athletes are more likely to sustain another injury when returning to sport after an initial concussion. The program focuses on the neck, which is an important factor in concussion risk because it supports the head. Assessments and exercises are performed to improve neck strength, stability, mobility, and function, which may help reduce risk for concussion. |
Occupational therapists provide education for managing symptoms and returning to school, work, or other daily activities. They can help implement energy management strategies to reduce fatigue or other symptoms that make it difficult to perform daily activities. They can also help coordinate appropriate school or work accommodations based on individual needs.
Our mental health team, comprised of social workers and psychologists, provides counselling support to help individuals address negative thoughts or feelings and understand how they may be affecting other aspects of their life. Our mental health professionals also teach coping strategies for stress, anxiety, sadness, irritability, and difficulty sleeping.
Neuropsychological Testing is a computerized neurocognitive screening test that objectively measures cognitive functioning in several domains including verbal memory, visual memory, attention, processing speed and cognitive flexibility. This is not a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, it is a screening tool that can help detect areas of difficulty. It can also help identify the need for additional or full neuropsychological evaluation.
Ergonomics assessments help identify specific aspects of a job or workstation that may contribute to discomfort. This information is used to make recommendations to address these factors and reduce discomfort, which may include changes to workstation layout, new equipment, or behavioral strategies.
Our massage therapists perform manual therapy and exercise techniques to help reduce muscle tension in the neck, back, and shoulders. This can help improve posture and mobility and alleviate headache, neck pain, or other muscular issues.
The Buffalo Concussion Treadmill/Bike Test is an evidence-based exertion test which helps determine a safe level of exercise to promote recovery from concussion. It also helps facilitate return to sport or other physical activities.
Extremely Grateful...
"As a parent of a child who has had concussions, I am extremely grateful for the work Dr Zemek have done to advance concussion care. He seeks to answer the questions that matter most to patients and families. He makes a difference because he engages with families as partners to help guide his research".
